How Do I Know If My Mac Needs More RAM

Maximizing your Mac's RAM can prove to be the best upgrade you'll ever make. Multi-tasking is improved dramatically and processing times for memory intensive software (think photoshop or final cut) are reduced significantly. The end result is a higher level of overall productivity, unless of course you're gaming, although RAM helps here too.
Here's an easy way to find out how much RAM your computer is using and if you would benefit from more:
Open your Activity Monitor (it should be in your Utilities folder). Click on the System Memory tab. If the pie chart is mostly green and blue (representing free and inactive memory, respectively), then you're in good shape. If the chart is mostly yellow and red (active and wired), then you're running out of RAM and may experience problems. Try opening your activity monitor while conducting different activities. For example, you'll probably have RAM to spare if you're only checking email, but rendering video will probably reveal a different result.
What kind of RAM should I get?
Don't be overly concerned with the brand name of RAM you choose. Apple usually buys Samsung, Hynix and Micron RAM modules in bulk. There is nothing special about Apple branded memory (on top of that, Apple's mark-up is outrageous). Any brand of RAM should do- just make sure it fits the specs of your system. Also, consider the warranty offered some offer 1 year while others offer a lifetime warranty- the choice should be obvious.
Some tips:
Any modern mac computer will have at least two memory slots. Although the brand name of RAM isn't altogether very important, some issues can arise if you mix brands (eg. run one Samsung and one Micron). It is strongly advised that you not do this.
The variations of RAM can be intimidating for the unfamiliar. The most important thing to remember is this: If you computer calls for DDR2, then use it and nothing else. DDR3 will not speed up your computer- it simply won't work. Do not mix up your DDR's under any circumstances.
Generally speaking, the RAM that you purchase for your mac will have the ability to "downclock". For example, a 1333Mhz RAM module will run in a laptop which is designed for 1066Mhz. Doing this has both benefits and drawbacks. The major benefit of doing this is cost. Like any other commodity, scarcity can result in price increases. It may be difficult to find 1066Mhz RAM, as it is seldom used anymore (and the price has therefore increased). In this case it may be advisable to purchase 1333mhz RAM instead.

Green Technology To Protect Our Planet!

Living in this 21st century has forced people to get involved in the clean technology that is known as the Green Technology. This technology is the blend of environmental science and latest technology to protect the environment and resources to alleviate the bad impact of human action on the earth. green technology is focused on best development that is not only done to the planet, but also to make our business more productive. It is a great approach to bring great innovations that can bring changes to our lives. It is in a progress to dominate services and products that do safeguard the planet, but also fulfill the needs of consumers. The growth of "Save the Planet" awareness has brought some great development and researches in technologies that can make this earth a better place to live.
Goals of Green Technology:
Green Technology is the next generation method of our modern society because it is really damaging to use technologies those having bad side effects on our planet. Every living being depends on the planet to survive and look for best way for the future. For this it's our responsibility to care the earth and find methods to protect it. Greentech is the best alternative to conventional technologies and the best thing is that it brings positive effects to our earth. It's time to promote recycling and spotlighting on recyclable and reusable products. Waste and pollution reduction will help humans better and also will make the future better.
Lets here have some idea on different types of Green Technology:
Power - This is the most imperative issue that needs to interfere by green technology. Fossil fuels, oil production are some of the traditional way of power generation. This brings lots of pollution during combustion and extraction. Conventional power generation is the basic cause of air pollution that is dragging our planet to global warming and change of climate. Within no time fossil fuels will be depleted from our earth and there will be limited resources left for the human race. Therefore, adopting greentech methods should be our first priority and to develop renewable energy sources.
Building - Construct and design buildings to preserve natural resources are also a wonderful way in greentech. Today, in the market you can get great products like building retrofits and blinds. These products will help to keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
Nanotechnology - Green Technology plans to expand novelty on the laws of nanotechnology.
Favored Purchasing - Greentech believes to put techniques those are safe to the environment and have the slightest negative impact. Due to the huge amount of advancement, there are many companies those have launched eco-friendly products and services.

What's The Contribution Of Science And Technology

The term science and technology is very common in today’s life. We use these two worlds almost every day in our life. These words have great contributions to us. Science is the main force of the human civilization. Everything, which is visible, is science. The application of different inventions of science is the technology. So the term science technology is commonly used together in every section of our life. There are a lot of contributions of science and technologies in our life. We can find out this is our everyday life. The thing, which gives us, light for removing the darkness of night is called an electric bulb. The invention of it is the contribution of science. The fact is now we do not use the bulb as it was at the time of invention. It has improved a lot.
This improvement is technology. So we can see the science and technology is lame without each other. There are also a lot of other examples of this things. We all know the uses of computer in our life. At the first time, computer was not so powerful. It was only a counting machine. Computer has got todays look and performance by the technology. then comes the telephone. This is a very necessary thing for our communication. The revaluation of telephone is amazing. The size of this thing has reduced a lot. The performance has also increased. So the contribution of science and technology is very high in the communication sector .So the facts is very clear.Science technology is very necessary for our life.
Is science is the car of civilization then technology is the fuel. So contribution of science or the contribution of technology cannot be measured. One only thing which can be said that humanity need both of science technology to survive.
The contribution of these new technologies has made a lot of changes in our life. Technology is now leading us to the top of the universe. This is the only working force of the world. There are a lot of technology experts who are working for to improve these latest technologies. Whatever it is the new technologies 2011 are the best things for this year. The experts are working for the updates of these things. They are leading the world to the top of the universe. The contribution of technology is te greatest thing for us.

The Advanced Chemical Technology

In today's world, it is becoming increasingly necessary for man to be able to manipulate the world around him in order to thrive, and as we continue to thrive we have to learn how to undo the damage we have done in past years. Chemical engineers are the only tool we have for new research and development in almost every field, including the medical field, environmental science, research science, and a large portion of the research done in the technological fields. They also study super-molecular self-assembly and organization and colloidal systems, all for use in the continued study of the human body and how it grows and develops. These technologies are enabling doctors to treat patients quicker and cheaper, which is more than necessary when one considers the dramatic shortage of doctors and nurses and the ever-growing list of people needing medical treatment. These technologies help an entire host of issues, the decrease in cost leads to health insurance becoming more affordable and therefore more accessible to the everyday citizen. Easier recovery times and safer surgeries lead to a higher survival rate and a better standard of living.

Technological development is not the sole focus of chemical engineering, however. Biochemical engineering involves the study of mammalian tissues, virus removal from blood, protein manipulation, and a wide array of genetic engineering technologies. These research scientists are leading the way to a number of cures and treatments that will improve the health of America Imagine a day when HIV/AIDS, cancers, and a wide array of terminal and debilitating conditions have been eradicated or are easily treated. Initially this industry was focused on aeroplanes and flight technology but it has expanded to also run the operation of outer space aircrafts. Some of the issues that aerospace engineers have to deal with include temperature change and control, atmospheric pressure and flight planning. They deal with these issues by using technologies such as aerodynamics, avionics, propulsion and material science.

However, some found his work very controversial because he did some work on a Nazi rocket programme and there was even a song written about him! Wernher had an interest in space and astronomy from a very early age and his mother supported his interest by buying him a telescope. Electrical engineering is centred around the study of electricity. However, what many people don't realise is that it covers a variety of subjects and industries such as electromagnetism, control systems, telecommunications and power. By gaining more experience and expertise, engineers can also choose to specialize in a specific area according to their interest and preference. They can either choose to specialize in a specific chemical process or products. Chemical engineers can specialize in chemical processes like oxidation, polymerization or nanomaterials. Primarily power generating sites can be captured using known chemical technology, concentrated, and then injected deep below the surface of the earth.

The Fingerprint Recognition Technology

Security will always be an issue on mobile handheld devices. If anyone gains access to your pin or password, these shady figures will also gain access to your private data stored within the phone's memory. This will disastrous especially if your data falls in the wrong hands. This will never be the case with the Motorola Atrix. This happens to us at least once in the entire time that we have owned smartphones. In these cases, hackers make use of special programs to determine your unique password or personal identification number. This simply means that no matter what you put as your security entry, your data can still be accessed. With this dual-core smartphone by Moto, this is less likely to happen. The other option of accessing the handset's functions is unique to every user. Users access this handset via fingerprint recognition technology. Since fingerprints are unique to every person, the likelihood of someone else accessing this phone's data is almost impossible.

Fingerprint analysis and identification is a 100-year old science, with thousands of studies made and articles written, and thus confidence rates of more than 99%. It's the cheapest, fastest, most convenient and most reliable way to identify someone. That's why fingerprint alone has almost 60% of the biometric world market, according to the Biometrics Market and Industry Report 2007-2012 from the International Biometric Group. Cars, cell phones, PDAs, personal computers and dozens of products and devices are using fingerprints more and more. Fingerprint recognition can be used from criminal investigations to time attendance systems, in a movie rental or in a police identification institute. Aside from these security options, there is another security feature that users can make use of in case they lose this handset or if they fall into the wrong hands. Users can remotely wipe the device's memory. The remote wipe feature allows you to delete the contents in the phone's memory wherever you may be. This means that even if they did have the hacking talent to get through the phone's sophisticated security there will no longer be any data to access.

When a fingerprint is applied to - or passed over - the sensor window of the fingerprint reader, the fingerprint is scanned and a gray-scale image is captured. A special computer software then identifies the key minutiae points from the image. These points are then converted into a unique digital representation, called "template", comparable to a very big password. There are a number of different ways to get an image of a fingerprint, and the most common methods today for electronic fingerprint readers are optical scanning and capacitance scanning. A fingerprint is taken and compared to each fingerprint in the database of registered users. When a match occurs, the user is "identified" as the existing user the system found. Since the newly acquired fingerprint is compared to many stored fingerprints, Fingerprint recognition technology is unique to this powerful smartphone.

Genetic Engineering Has Affected Every Field Of Life

In ancient times, farmers generally relied on the natural elements to plan their planting cycles. Crops were planted during dry season, and harvested before the wet season. Farmers also used organic or natural fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals to nurture their crops and eliminate harmful pests. In genetic engineering, the inherent structure of crops were modified in ways were they are considered safe to be eaten. Some crop breeders and scientists have even induced mutations in a crop's genetic structure though chemicals, radiation and chemicals. The process of altering a crop's genetic structure to make it pest and drought-resistant is now referred to as GMO development, or genetically modified engineering. Creating and sustaining an organic lifestyle means we are in the "center" of that activity, daily. Among all the other things going on in our daily lives, as moms, we are also trying to develop new habits for our family in regards to their health and well being.

Today, gene transfer technology is available worldwide, and some even hail this development as a victory against pests and sudden weather changes. However, many worry that few large companies are slowly gaining full control of world agriculture, to the detriment of small farmers in poorer countries. The GMO industry however counters that poor third-world farmers can actually adopt these GMO technologies, to help them achieve efficient farming practices, as well as to ward off harmful pests from their fields. However, critics of the uses of genetic engineering argue that genetic engineering is a technology is actually making global agriculture dependent only on large multinational companies.

Genetic engineering today is no longer a new term for the world. Every day in the newspapers, televisions, magazines the new inventions of genetic engineering are noticed. Genetic engineering may be described as the practice that manipulates organism's genes in order to produce a desired outcome. The Bible also throws some light on genetic engineering where selective breeding has been mentioned. Modern genetic engineering began in 1973 when Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen used enzymes to cut a bacteria plasmid and inserted another strand of DNA in the gap created. Both bits of DNA were taken from the same type of bacteria. This step became the milestone in the history of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering requires three elements: the gene to be transferred, a host cell into which the gene is inserted, and a vector to bring about the transfer.

Nanotechnology Concentrates On The Basic Building Blocks Of Matter

Nanotechnology is different than conventional technology that we see. Conventional technology does not use application of various procedures and properties which require a huge research. Nanotechnology is something different, something that can be invented and refined over a period of time. It also means it is something that differentiates the world within us and shows a new way of life. Application of nanotechnology is done in so many ways for better living. A nanometer measures around one-billionth of a meter which represents the size that is smaller than that of an atom. Though the size of an atom cannot be determined specifically, a typical atom is said to have a diameter of one-tenth of a nanometer. Nano scale is the measure of size of molecules. The manipulation made at molecular level can create all kinds of interesting materials. Understanding the matter at a very small scale and controlling it at the dimensions of nearly between 1 and 100 nanometers constitute nanotechnology.

The nanotechnology concentrates on the basic building blocks of matter. For example, the nano-particles of zinc-oxide can be used as sun block in the form of transparent lotion spread on the skin and to protect the skin. It was reported that physicians are trying to take out the protein parts of the viruses and use them as small drugs to treat cancer. As scientists slowly learn to manipulate the molecules and change them in their functionality, the world gradually changes. The secrets behind many big things will be revealed by just the smallest things. This is the bright side of the coin when it comes to nanotech. New inventions will give the human various options in leading a good and healthy life. Yes, we have sort of progressed in the field of extreme science, new elements are discovered which provide an alternate route for high end living. Then there is the other side of the coin which says that nanotech can end the human life. Various applications like nuclear warfare, weapons and other harmful substances make use of nanotech. Environment impact on nanotechnology is huge and has very bad effects. It has the capacity to destroy the heaven in which we are living at the moment. Toxicity present is very high which is not at all suitable for the environment.

Human is always in the pursuit of creativity, he is never satisfied neither happy with what he has. To accomplish his needs, soon nanotechnology will be put to use. In that use the quality depends and its meaning, it nanotech is in wrong hands then the sufferer will be the human and no one else. But yes, a tremendous growth can be welcomed if it’s in right hands. Making items in small scale and small size is expected to give complete and high performance products. It was also observed that the characteristics of its physical phenomenon also becomes prominent and significant as the product's size decreases. For example, in the case of statistical mechanical effect and quantum mechanical effect, the properties of solids are observed to change with the alteration in particle size. Molecular nanotechnology is similar to molecular assemblers which resemble the ribosomes. Ribosomes are cell organelles which assemble the amino acids on the mRNA. In the same way, future nanotechnology also visualizes in bringing the molecular machines. Research studies have been conducted in Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories on non-biological molecular machines and they have constructed devices of that kind.

The Pocket PC

When I first started using sat nav units, the thrill of simply having a unit tell you where to go, was pleasure enough, and all this without even voice commands, just a beep to announce an impending turn or action, to see what that involved meant having a good look at the screen and figuring it out, which was always interesting while driving. GPS manufacturers these days are locked in an ever increasing fight to win over customers, not a day goes by without this or that new feature, to entice you away from your money. Pocket PC sat nav isn't widely used due to the need for some loading of software and and a spattering of computer knowledge, nothing that involves needing the intellect of Einstein. Speed is the main advantage of pocket pc sat nav. Software is widely available that supports traffic information, speed camera's poi's in fact everything a dedicated unit will do only a lot better. Manufacturers are now striving to make their units ever more portable allowing it to be used while navigating on foot, using say Garmins city navigator, or the other end of the stick, taking it with you so it doesn't end up being sold down the pub for a tenner.

Having pocket PC sat nav, gives you, portability, processing speed, up to 624mhz far faster than any dedicated unit, and if you are into venturing into the great outdoors, just load up a full ordnance survey mapping program for what ever area you need, and revel in lightning route calculations, map redraws and much better sat nav experience. There are still other models of pocket pc out there. You just need to study the various features of each pocket pc and consider some other factors like budget and you?re on the way of owning a versatile pocket pc. Most users while switching from regular cellular phones to PDA-phones notice that PDAs are harder to control when things come to simple phone tasks, like one hand operation, making calls from a phonebook and so on. For example, to write a new text message on the Windows Mobile phone you have to start Messaging application and tap "New" button.

For wireless connectivity, this device makes two interface options available. One is the integrated Bluetooth 1.2, which allows sending and receiving data from other Bluetooth enabled devices, like laptops or phones. The other option is the 802.11b Wi-Fi, for easy connectivity and use of the internet. It comes with the WM8750 audio processor and an impressive video play back. It also offers a number of great games including Tennis Addict, Ancient Evil, Bejeweled 2 and Arvale, among others. Being a Windows based mobile it obviously also offers the Windows Mobile applications including PowerPoint, Excel as well as MS Word. A major advantage of this device is its satellite navigator, Dell Navigator sat nav. The Europe and UK are entirely covered, and one can select the country of choice to view its maps. It allows swift and easy setting up of routes. The battery included with the Axim X51 is a lithium-ion battery which is user replacable. Its backup is somewhat of a disappointment; the battery may last for as less as only a few hours, depending on the kind of application being used.

Are All Electrons Identical?

Electrons, like Black Holes, have no hair. That means they have no individual personality. In fact Black Holes can be said to have some fuzz because they can and do differ in terms of size, mass and electric charge. Electrons have the exact same size, mass and electric charge, so absolutely no hair! Relative to Black Holes, electrons (and positrons) are absolutely bald! Take another electron and another positron and repeat the scenario. The pair will annihilate releasing an identical amount of energy in the process. The amount of energy released in each electron-positron annihilation case is the same, to as many decimal places as you can measure. That's quite unlike taking a match from a box of matches, striking same and releasing its stored chemical energy as heat energy. Another match from the same box wouldn't release, to as many decim.

Now maybe, as in all things quantum, these strings can be one unit in length, or two units, or three units, or four units, etc. Any positive whole number multiple of one string length is okay. Now say that a two length unit of string is an electron. A two unit length of anti-string is therefore a positron. All strings are of the same fundamental length - their rate of vibration can differ, but at precise intervals. What causes strings to vibrate at the rate they do, and how they can change rates of vibration (morph from one kind of particle into others) are questions better left for another time. You might note if they are under the influence. You might figure out something about their history from scars, whether they limp, are in a wheelchair, wear a cast, or have deformities. If you observe them at say a supermarket, you might be able to figure out if they have kids or pets or even determine something about their lifestyle and relative wealth. In short, not knowing someone doesn't mean you can't uncover a lot of information about them - just by watching. However, you can't extrapolate that information and claim you know anything about yet another person.

However, even though Black Holes have way less individual features relative to humans or planets, they do have more than electrons. Line up nine electrons - you got nine identical clones. Line up nine Black Holes. They won't all have identical masses; their overall electric charge may be differing; their rotation rates won't all be the same; they can grow or shrink, be born and die (no resurrection). Still, they don't have much of a personality. If you see the same object twice, thrice of a zillion times over, then it's the same object and the fact that it is consistently identical is not a great mystery. But how can the Universe contain only one electron? That seems to be the least obvious statement anyone could ever make - the statement of a total wacko.

Science and Technology In Life

Science is search for the profound knowledge. Scientists investigate the world around us. They observe how things work and develop ideas about ways to make them work better. Sometimes they try to test an idea to explain how something works. Scientists perform experiments to find out how things work.An invention is the new technology created. An inventor with a new idea or design for an invention may decide to have the idea protected. The idea gets protection from the law in a paper called a patent. A patent prevents other people from making, using, or selling the new idea without permission from the inventor. Some inventions are simply a better way of doing or building something. They may improve an existing technology. Other inventions are much more complicated. They change how people think and live. The future constantly brings us even more changes. This will happen as we continue to learn about the world.
Computer programmers use computer technology to write a computer program. People may write letters using a computer program called a word processor. Many people work in the entertainment industry. Camera operators use television and motion-picture cameras. They use them to make TV shows and movies. Disc jockeys, or DJs, play records and CDs on the radio.Graphic designers use desktop publishing programs to create books and magazines. Although we cannot state for a fact when our human obsession with beauty started the fact remains that it has been around for a very long time. That said; the first archaeological evidence of cosmetic usage was actually recorded in Egypt way back around 3500 BC. This proves that cosmetics have been around for thousands of years. It is said that the ancient Egyptian women actually used Kohl to darken their eyelids.
Unlike in the past where the absence of regulation concerning the production of beauty products led to extreme side effects such as deformities and even death, today there are governing bodies which set the guidelines for the manufacture of cosmetic products. One governing regulation that these bodies have is that companies that manufacture or sell cosmetics are liable for any side effects that may arise as a result of use of that product.Either way, the droplets that are dispersed are meant to alter the surface tension of the water and oil phases thus preventing separation. The result is usually a homogenous product that not only produces an even skin texture but is also safer to use. The emulsifiers also act by reducing trans-epidermal water loss that sometimes causes itchiness. Allergic reactions to some oils in cosmetics have also been reduced by the use of emulsifiers. It was proven to be highly toxic to the nervous and immune system.

Life Science

Whether you need to tackle questions in Life Science, Physical Science or Earth and Space Science, our experts will work with you to make everyday homework and assignments a breeze. Most junior high school science classes broadly cover the natural science, from basic physics, chemistry, earth sciences, and biology. Grasping so many concepts can be tricky, though, so if you need homework help for 8th grade science, you should consider these following points.
Junior high is the time when schools change from general ideas to specific concepts in terms of teaching science. Teachers are preparing you for high school the more rigorous science classes you will take in high school. Therefore, it is vitally important that you start building good study habits ASAP. Up until this point in school, you could probably get by without studying or readying the book too closely. Well, not anymore. It is really important to read the assigned chapters in the book and understand what the book is saying. Also very important is to do the homework and understand what you're doing! You will eventually be tested on the material covered in homework--that is a guarantee.
If you believe you're spending enough time reading the book but aren't getting the grade you want, you should consider getting homework help for 8th grade science from another source, be it your parents or a tutor. If you're already spending 4-6 minimum per week studying (that should probably be enough studying to get an A in most junior high science classes), then you need to seek outside help. A tutor can quickly help you get back on track with the concepts from class. Ask your teacher if you are looking for and can't find additional homework help.

Current news about India

India is technological and scientifically advancing. It's excelling in almost every field of science and technology. News inventions, discoveries, achievements are all in the technology news and current affairs of science. One needs to be updated and aware of the prosperity of one's country.
Chandryan spacecraft had claimed the discovery of water on moon which was later confirmed by NASA's moon Mineralogy Mapper, M3.
Due to many rumors about usage of mobile phones leading to death, an inter ministerial committee by department of telecommunication was set up ti examine adoption of safety exposure from radio frequency produced by mobile phone, however, in their study it was difficult to find and link between radio frequency and health.
New scientific and technological research suggests that children up to 5 years of age can use a computer mouse. Since most of the education systems are adopting the usage of computers for the students to study, it is very important for the child to practice the skill from a young age.
The recent technological news is that India will develop its own global positioning system (GPS) by launching seven satellites in the upcoming four to six years. This GPS would help the country to enhance its surveillance capabilities and improves its weapon systems.
Current news in science field is that National Tsunami Warning system that was formed, to detect tsunamigenic earthquakes which help in monitoring of tsunami waves. This was formed by National service for ocean information services (NCOIS) by Ministry of Earth sciences at Hyderabad. This system is working well along the entire mainland coastline of India along with Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands.
One of the efforts of the technology and science department in creating a society without boundaries is the National Knowledge Network (NKN). Launch of the website and logo will happen soon.
India launched its first expedition to Ny- Alseund in the SpitsBergen Island of Norway, which marks the long term research of Indian scientists through global Endeavour in the artic region.
The scientists of anthropological survey of India have been studying mitochondrial DNA of tribal groups in India for the past 5 years, it has been noticed that most of the tribal communities in India have mitochondrial DNA lineage which are more common to Indian sub-continent indicating common ancestry.
Science and Technology form an important part of every nation. To excel in any field one should have a good knowledge of the level of growth of science in one's country. The technology news and current affairs on science continuously keeps on updated on the improvements in this field.

On the internet movie audiences viewing lengthier on tablets

As numerous customers hungrily watch for tomorrow's discharge associated with Amazon's Kindle Fireplace, there's proof which pills might be reshaping on the internet watching routines.

Pill customers averaged 30 % much more watching period for each program in contrast to desktop computers, based on information launched this particular 7 days through Ooyala, the supplier associated with movie providers in order to main manufacturers. Pill customers additionally were known to become much more involved, completing movies from almost two times the actual price because desktop computer customers.

For every moment associated with movie viewed on the desktop computer, pill customers viewed for just one moment seventeen mere seconds, typically twenty-eight % lengthier compared to desktop computer watching. Movie conclusion prices upon pills had been additionally 30 % greater than non-tablet cellular devices.

Whilst on the internet audiences had been prone to use laptop computers or even desktop computers to view brief videos, the information shows that audiences tend to be embracing pills, cellular devices, as well as linked TELEVISION products as well as online game units with regard to moderate as well as long-form movies. Movies 10 min's or even lengthier paid for with regard to 30 % associated with several hours viewed upon cellular devices, forty two % upon pills, as well as seventy five % upon linked TELEVISION products as well as online game units.

The research additionally discovered which audience wedding had been "generally higher" with regard to long-form movies. Cellular customers were known to accomplish three-quarters of the long-form movie for a price associated with 20 %, in contrast to eighteen % with regard to desktop computers.

At the same time, audiences upon linked TELEVISION products as well as online game units finished long-form content material in a greater price compared to audiences that viewed upon every other gadget. (Research launched previously within 7 days discovered which gaming units have grown to be typically the most popular method for Ough. Utes. customers to view on the internet amusement content material on the Televisions. )#)

Apple's apple ipad had been typically the most popular pill with regard to watching on the internet movie throughout the 3rd one fourth, sales with regard to 99. four % associated with shows as well as ninety-seven. 7 % associated with complete performs.

i-phones paid for with regard to 56 % associated with movie performs, in contrast to thirty six. 8 % with regard to Android-powered mobile phones. Nevertheless, Google android edged away apple iphone as a whole movie min's, providing forty-nine % in order to i-phones forty-four %.

The information had been gathered from the mix portion of the business's client as well as companion data source, that functions a lot more than 100 zillion distinctive month-to-month audiences within a lot more than 100 nations.

The research arrives because Amazon . com get's prepared to deliver it's Android-powered Kindle Fire--the Web retailer's very first foray to the pill marketplace, that has to date already been centered through the apple ipad. However experts think the actual Kindle Fire's reduced $199 cost tag--most pills list for approximately $500--could help to make this the very first genuine rival within an region exactly where a number of other high-end Google android pills possess skipped the actual tag.

A Guide for PC Buyers Not Looking for a Tablet

If you're shopping for a laptop this autumn, you'll find most of the capabilities and prices in the sluggish market unchanged. You'll still likely be considering whether it's time to get a tablet instead of a new laptop.

Taking cues from Apple's Macbook Air, PC companies have begun developing their own slimmed down laptops. WSJ's Walt Mossberg reviews these new "Ultrabooks".

But if you're focused on a Windows machine, and you look carefully, you'll see that a new class of portable PC is beginning to appear. It's called the "ultrabook," and is essentially the Windows version of Apple's popular, nearly four-year old MacBook Air—an ultraskinny, light, speedy, versatile laptop with long battery life.

The arrival of the ultrabook is a welcome development, not only because it spices up the market, but because I consider the MacBook Air the best all-around consumer laptop available, and anything that emulates it is a good idea, if done well.

There are only a few ultrabooks available this season and they aren't for everybody. Most have limited storage and, like the MacBook Air, are priced near the $1,000 range—rich territory in a tight economy where Apple buyers seem comfortable, though not many others. Still, this new class of Windows laptop is the only fundamentally fresh choice in the laptop market.

If the price is too high, you should be able to get a capable major-brand laptop for between $500 and $800, with plenty of storage and memory.

My annual fall laptop buyers' guide today offers tips for wading through the technobabble in computer ads, and in online and physical stores. As always, these tips are for average consumers doing common tasks, such as email, Web browsing, social networking, general office productivity, photos, music, videos and simple games. This guide isn't meant for corporate buyers, or for hard-core gamers or serious media producers.

The tablet question: Tablets like Apple's iPad 2 and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 can perform many, though not all, of the functions of a laptop. Most tablet lovers find themselves reaching for their laptops less often to do things like email. If your budget is limited and you're thinking of shelling out $500 for a full-size tablet, consider whether you can put off getting a new laptop this year instead of buying both.

Future Windows: If you're shopping for a Windows laptop, be aware that in 2012, Microsoft will offer a new version of Windows, called Windows 8, with a radical new multitouch interface that makes use of a touch screen. The software giant stresses that Windows 8 won't require such a screen, and will still work with a mouse or touch pad. But unless you have a laptop with a multi-touch screen, you won't be able to take advantage of the Windows 8 touch-screen features.

Ultrabooks: Four companies make this class of laptop: Acer,Lenovo,Asus and, shortly, Toshiba. These machines are under 0.8 inch thick, weigh less than three pounds, and generally claim long battery life and almost-instant startup times. All run Windows 7; none has a touch screen. Like the MacBook Air, they use solid-state drives (though some combine these with standard hard disks) and have screens of either 11 inches or 13 inches. Prices generally run from around $900 to $1,100.

Accel ponies up $100m to juice big data biz

Hadoop World We have entered the business era of the big data eon. That's just a fancy way of saying that software companies are trying to take Hadoop and the myriad new tools that wrap around it and convert them into money by unseating incumbents in data warehousing and analytics – and, quite frankly, by doing some jobs that no one could handle before.

Now the big money is starting to move in: venture capital behemoth Accel Partners is ponying up $100m to invest in big-data startups that are looking to become the application giants that will make a killing by creating Hadoop-based applications that are fit for normal business consumption.

Ping Li, a partner at Accel since 2004, said in his keynote address at the Hadoop World Conference in New York on Tuesday that the opportunity for making money was enormous. The volume of data being kept is growing very quickly, and every kind of event log or twitch of a company's applications and web servers is being preserved in the hope that it can be mined for insight into customers and markets.

Moreover, unstructured data types are proliferating and companies don't want to rely in the old batch-oriented ways of current Hadoop setups to chew through this data. As usual, business managers want real-time data, just as they did in the 1970s when online transaction processing replaced batch operations for core applications.

This trend is going to mean investment flowing to companies that can improve the Hadoop infrastructure. And unlike those early OLTP days, companies want applications to ride on top of Hadoop and its various adjuncts to provide them with distilled information, and they don't want to build those apps from scratch.

"These new types of data are breaking legacy platforms," Li said. "And this is a big market, not just something for Web 2.0 companies." And to that end, Accel is putting up $100m for its Big Data Fund to help find the Microsofts and Facebooks of the Hadoop application era – and, of course, hopefully before the competition does.

"If you are an entrepreneur with a great idea, I implore you, take some money from this guy," said Cloudera CEO Mike Olson, who also spoke during the keynote. Accel is one of the early investors in Cloudera, which was first out the door with a commercially supported release of the Apache Hadoop stack. "We've got a chance to do something that only comes along once in a generation."

Yahoo! created Hadoop to mimic the operations of Google's search engine circa 2001. It is written in Java and consists of a MapReduce framework that spreads log files, web click streams, and other unstructured data across a network of servers. Then a MapReduce algorithm looks for connections between all this data, as well as any structured data ripped out of database and pumped into the Hadoop Distributed File System.

The mapping part of the algorithm means telling calculations where they need to go to find the pieces of data they need, and the reducing part refers to bringing together the results across thousands of nodes to pull together a summarized answer.

Yahoo! open sourced Hadoop in 2009, and creator Doug Cutting named it after his kid's stuffed elephant. A few Yahoo! employees left to start Cloudera, which jumped out there first to commercialize Hadoop. Since then, the remaining Yahoo! team has been spun out to create HortonWorks, IBM has commercialized its own BigInsights variant, and a number of players including Parascale, MapR, and Appistry have all come out with alternative files systems to HDFS. Platform Computing has even gone so far as to take its own Java-based financial messaging system used for risk analysis and high speed trading, and make it compatible with Hadoop APIs as an alternative to Hadoop itself.

There's a lot going on out there in Hadoop World. That is just the tip of the elephant's trunk.

Accel was an early investor in Cloudera, which announced $40m in Series D funding at the conference this morning, which it is hosting. This time around, Ignition Partners lead the investment with Accel Partners, Greylock Partners, Meritech Capital Partners, and In-Q-Tel also kicked in some cash to Cloudera. The company has raised $76m in four rounds of funding in the past three years, and Accel has been in all four rounds.

Li says that big-data platforms such as Hadoop – there are others, but they don't generate the same level of excitement – are going mainstream, and that "native" big data applications and services will quickly emerge once companies get Hadoop installed and learn how to use it.

In the prior computing era, where data and systems were not so big – say from 1980 to 2010, in Li's oversimplification – physical mainframes, midrange, and x86 servers were the infrastructure, and applications ran on relational database management systems.

This time around, the infrastructure is going to be virtualized private and public clouds. Hadoop and its add-ons will comprise the data management layer, and a whole new set of analytics, customer relationship management, collaboration, security, and vertical applications aimed at financial services, healthcare, and others areas are going to ride that elephant.

"Multi-billion dollar software companies are going to be created," said Li – and Accel wants to get in on the action.

But before this can happen, Hadoop has had to do a lot of growing up. Hadoop is "a complex piece of multi-tenant infrastructure and it has to behave in your data center," explained Olson.

"It's not enough to have a platform that sophisticated Java developers can use. Business users need to access this," he said.

And over the next year, Olson expects all kinds of apps to come to market to make it easier for regular people – not just Java wizards – to make use of Hadoop. And, if it is done right, they won't even know they're using Hadoop.

What's Coming to Amazon's Lending Library?

Is actually Amazon's brand new Kindle e-book financing plan really worth the buying price of the $79 yearly Amazon . com Perfect regular membership? You can now take a look on your own; the actual listing of qualified publications is actually submitted upon Amazon's Site.

There's also a few classics such as Dracula, Alice's Activities within Wonderland, Cherish Isle as well as Small Ladies, in addition to newer strikes such as Drinking water with regard to Elephants.

The actual number-one guide upon Amazon . com, Walt Isaacson's resource associated with Apple company co-founder Dorrie Work, isn't about the checklist, neither is actually Steve Grisham's The actual Litigators.

The actual checklist was initially mentioned through CNET, that observed the Marketers Lunch time twitter through Fri. Which twitter stated there have been just two, seven hundred Perfect financial loans as well as, certainly, the amount detailed below "Kindle Edition" presently states two, 985, however clicking on via provides you with 5, 377 choices.

As you commentor mentioned, nevertheless, Amazon's complete checklist just rises to at least one, two hundred. For that complete 5, 377 publications you need to exercise lower through class about the left-hand club.

Whenever Amazon . com introduced it's e-book financing collection upon Thursday, the organization stated clients could select from "thousands" associated with publications. This program can be obtained in order to Amazon . com Perfect people having a Kindle gadget; it's not going to work with individuals with Kindle applications upon iOS or even Google android products or even the actual COMPUTER, for instance. Clients may just be lent 1 free of charge e-book monthly, however there is no deadline.

Picking a e-books, nevertheless, is actually leading to a few debate. Based on the Walls Road Diary, the actual 6 biggest Ough. Utes. marketers aren't taking part because of issue more than long term product sales, however the LOS ANGELES Occasions highlights which a few marketers that elected away had been amazed to determine their own publications about the financing checklist anyhow. Amazon creates Kindle double standard

These days, Amazon . com introduced which Kindle proprietors along with Perfect regular membership could be lent publications from absolutely no additional price, each month, without any because of times. It is amazing information (that all of us currently protected), however it indicates a brand new double-standard, one which may without doubt develop. To put it simply, individuals who personal Amazon . com equipment can get much more things.

So far, Amazon . com may be type sufficient to deal with e-book clients similarly, whether or not they personal the Kindle gadget, make use of the free of charge application on the majority of smart phone as well as pill systems — or even each. That is what is amazing regarding Kindle publications, as well as why is all of them therefore aggressive. In spite of becoming secured lower along with electronic privileges administration, you can "buy all of them as soon as, as well as study all of them anyplace, inch in order to be lent Amazon's personal phrasing.

With regards to press, Amazon . com is a a bit more rigid. Although it's lengthy permitted individuals to flow movie on the pc or even on the internet gadget, it does not come with an application with regard to apple iphone as well as apple ipad. It's loading songs support is actually Google android pleasant, although actually which application could not end up being referred to as "lovely. inch

All of us understood the actual Kindle Fireplace might additional focus Amazon's movie as well as songs choices — this just is sensible which you'd probably have the ability to flow content material to that particular gadget, as well as there is no precedent with regard to being able to access which content material by way of additional cellular devices. However maintaining the brand new financing plan through apple iphone, apple ipad as well as Google android customers, a lot of who contentedly spend $80 each year with regard to Perfect support, is really a alter within program with regard to Amazon's e-book technique. Actually the general public collection support released previously this season can be obtained in order to customers from the free of charge application.

I have requested Amazon . com in the event that there is a reason for that brand new program's proprietor restriction, as well as enables you to understand basically listen to back again. This definitely does not appear to be the specialized restriction, because any kind of era associated with Kindle is actually entitled to this program.

Meanwhile, We study this particular because Amazon's method of bringing together it's target audience, tugging a good Apple company, as well as tying equipment, software program as well as providers collectively within an progressively profitable style, as well as let us encounter this, one which defintely won't be as well harmful to clients possibly. (The actual technique certain because daylights did not harm Apple company. )#) I simply desired to stage this away, notifying individuals to consider much more drawing a line under of the character, as well as allow individuals who truly are at odds of shut techniques in order to seem away.

Amazon . com verified in my experience this had been the proceed to construct Kindle possession: "We constructed this particular support to create running a Kindle gadget much more appealing, inch stated the consultant.

Apple in His Own Image

Tim Cook promised that Apple Inc. wouldn't change when he took over the company's helm from Steve Jobs in August.

But the low-key Mr. Cook has already put his operational mark on Apple in ways that suggest the company won't be entirely the same as under its intense and tempestuous co-founder.

Tim Cook promised that Apple wouldn't change when he took over from co-founder Steve Jobs in August but the low-key executive has already put his operational mark on the company. Jessica Vascellaro has details on The News Hub.

In recent weeks, Mr. Cook has tended to administrative matters that never interested Mr. Jobs, such as promotions and corporate reporting structures, according to people familiar with the matter. The new chief executive, 50 years old, has also been more communicative with employees than his predecessor, sending a variety of company-wide emails that address Apple employees as "Team," people close to the company said.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook speaks in front of an image of an iPhone 4S.

Mr. Cook has also displayed some different corporate philosophies from Mr. Jobs. The new CEO recently announced a charitable program promising Apple would match employee donations to non-profits of up to $10,000 a year, starting in the U.S. In contrast, Mr. Jobs said at a company off-site meeting last year that he was opposed to giving money away, according to a person who attended.

Much about the technology giant hasn't changed and isn't expected to. Mr. Cook, an Apple veteran who became chief operating officer in 2005 and who ran the company during Mr. Jobs's multiple medical leaves, isn't a fan of reorganizations, said a person familiar with the matter. He is also a fierce believer in Apple's culture, which prizes product development and design and preaches intense secrecy.

But the moves Mr. Cook has made since he officially took over the CEO title on Aug. 24 provide signs of how he will seek to run Apple in the years ahead, imposing more discipline on a place that for years was guided by Mr. Jobs's gut.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment and said Mr. Cook wasn't available for an interview.

A supply chain whiz fluent in sales charts and forecasts, Mr. Cook is a disciplined manager and a contrast to Mr. Jobs, who had little patience for management matters, according to friends and colleagues of both.

Mr. Cook is accessible, and over the years served as a sounding board for executives who wanted advice on approaching Mr. Jobs, former Apple employees say.

In recent weeks, Mr. Cook has restructured Apple's big education division that deviated from the company's overall organizational structure, according to a person familiar with the matter.

For years, that business had operated fairly independently. Mr. Cook split the business into a sales arm and a marketing arm and incorporated the groups into their respective company-wide divisions, said this person.

The move streamlined Apple's structure and increased the responsibilities of senior vice president of world-wide product marketing Phil Schiller and John Brandon, a vice president who oversees many of Apple's sales channels and has worked closely with Mr. Cook for years, this person said. Apple's education head John Couch, who had reported to Mr. Cook, now reports to Mr. Schiller.

Within days of taking over, Mr. Cook also promoted vice president Eddy Cue to Apple's senior vice president of Internet software and services, bumping up the title of one of the company's most visible executives.

Former executives and people close to Apple say they also expect Mr. Cook to be more open with shareholders and customers than Mr. Jobs, citing Mr. Cook's willingness to meet fairly regularly with investors over the years.

"Steve thought he had all the answers," said Toni Sacconaghi, a research analyst who covers Apple for Sanford Bernstein & Co. "I am not sure Tim thinks he has all the answers." Mr. Sacconaghi also describes Mr. Cook as "surprisingly candid" about parts of the company, such as its iPhone expansion strategy.

One area people expect Mr. Cook to eventually focus on is what to do with Apple's $81.6 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Mr. Jobs was opposed to stock buybacks, according to former Apple executives.

But Mr. Cook seems open to more traditional options for Apple's cash hoard, such as dividends or a buyback, say people who have discussed the matter with Apple executives.

On the company's fiscal fourth quarter earnings call last month, Mr. Cook said, "I'm not religious about holding cash or not holding it."

Any such moves would be up to all of Apple's directors, of which Mr. Cook is one, and wouldn't likely happen soon, according to one of these people.

One other difference with Mr. Jobs: Mr. Cook is "not a product guy," his colleagues and friends often say. That's a sentiment Mr. Jobs himself echoed to author Walter Isaacson in a recently published biography.

People close to the company question whether Mr. Cook can continue the string of hits that have made Apple the world's largest technology company.

In the past, Mr. Cook once asked an employee briefing him on a new service, "tell me again how this helps me sell more phones," according to this person.

Apple begins investigation into iPhone 4S battery life

While the massive popularity of the iPhone 4S has been a great success for Apple, a growing number of iPhone 4S owners are complaining about battery life issues with the new smartphone.

According to a report from The Guardian, Apple engineers have started contacting vocal iPhone 4S owners that have been complaining about the rapidly draining iPhone 4S battery. During the initial iPhone 4S presentation earlier this month, Apple mentioned that standby time for the iPhone 4S battery was rated at about 200 hours or a bit over eight days. This is a large drop from the 300 hour standby time of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, likely due to the upgrades to the internal hardware within the iPhone 4S. One iPhone 4S user reported that standby mode was eating up approximately ten percent of the battery power each hour and eventually draining the battery by the end of the workday.

iPhone-4S-battery-lifeWhile Apple engineers haven’t specifically identified the problem yet, many iPhone 4S users have collectively pointed to location services as the main culprit for the drain on the battery. Specifically, the “Setting Time Zone” function within iOS 5 that corrects the Time Zone as a user travels to different areas of the world is constantly attempting to check the current Time Zone. iPhone 4S owners who identified this problem see the purple, location arrow icon beside the toggle setting within the menu. This means that the Time Zone has been checked within the last 24 hours. Users that have turned off the Time Zone feature, as well as many other location functions of the phone, have reported vastly improved battery life on the iPhone 4S as well as other iPhones that have upgraded to iOS 5.

The “Setting Time Zone” function can be located within Settings, moving into “Location Services”, scrolling down to “System Services” and sliding the toggle on “Setting Time Zone”. Apple engineers will likely adjust settings within the next iOS 5 update to modify how often location-based apps are automatically updated to allow for greater battery life for all iPhone 4S users.

Google opens up to enterprises and apps

As promised at last week’s Web 2.0 Summit, Google has opened its social networking site to enterprises, via integration with Google Apps.

The move will see hundreds of companies pouring onto the social network and setting up business pages. Over the next few days customers of Google Apps for Business or free customers will get access to Google+. Mountain View is also opening up the service to universities that use Apps for Education – from the prestigious Notre Dame to Loughborough University in the UK.

“For those of you who’ve already started using Google+ with a personal Google Account and would prefer to use your Google Apps account, we’re building a migration tool to help you move over,” blogged Google Product Manager Ronald Ho. “With this tool, you won’t have to rebuild your circles, and people who’ve already added you to their circles will automatically be connected to your new profile.”

The tools would be rolled out over the next few weeks. Ho acknowledged that the company had hoped to have these features available sooner, but that they had proved more difficult to integrate than had first been thought. Part of the problem has been the rapid growth of the service, with Google saying it had exceeded all expectations – but then, it would say that.

Google is planning a whole range of communal working tools for the service, and as a first stage has released Creative kit, a basic photo editor. With over three billion photos on the website, in part due to Android phones automatically uploading them, Google is clearly looking for a prettier experience.

For consumers, Google+ now has a visualization tool to see how information spreads on the network, dubbed Ripples. Clicking on a public posting shows the rate of interest in a post, and who the key influencers have been since its creation. Expect marketing people to be firing a lot of discussion test balloons on the site while they try out new ideas and harvest data.

Both Apps users and businesses have expressed displeasure over the delay in this kind of linkage, considering how well Facebook has developed business integration. At last week’s conference, Sergey Brin and Vic Gundotra were asked pointed questions on the topic, and promised action within days – but it’s clear Google still has a lot of catching up to do.

Battlefield 3 on Xbox Looks Awful Without HD Texture Pack

The world of non-HD Battlefield 3 is a very fuzzy place indeed.

Although Battlefield 3's PC graphics look amazing, things might be a little different for gamers playing the game on an Xbox. If your Xbox doesn't have Battlefield's HD texture pack installed - either because you don't have room or just don't have a hard drive - the graphics that you'll experience will be nothing like the gameplay we've seen up until now.

The attached video, recorded by WikiGamesGuide, shows what the Xbox Battlefield 3 looks like with and without the HD texture pack installed. I really don't know what business the non-texture pack version has looking so much worse than its HD counterpart; Battlefield: Bad Company 2 didn't look as good as the HD version of its sequel, but it didn't need any extras to maintain graphics superior to the non-HD display.

If you're planning on playing Battlefield 3 on an Xbox, it goes without saying that we'd recommend you make room for its HD texture pack on your hard drive. The video shows a non-HD world filled with disappearing graffiti, fuzzy tyres, floaty cardboard boxes and some generally very grainy gameplay that is to be avoided. The differences are really very stark, looking at times almost as if you're watching a modern gameplay video compared with one from several years ago. While it has to be said that this issue probably won't affect too many players, it does seem a little demanding. Though, that's probably what happens when you design a console game using the PC as your lead platform.

'Battlefield' throws down gauntlet before 'Warfare' lands

All apologies to Marvin Gaye, but war is what's going on in video games right now. And perhaps the biggest war game showdown to date kicks off this week with Electronic Arts' release of first-person combat game Battlefield 3, available Tuesday.

EA, the No. 2 publisher in the U.S., has Activision's multibillion-dollar Call of Duty franchise in its sights. Deploying Battlefield 3 two weeks before the Nov. 8 arrival of the next Call of Duty installment, Modern Warfare 3, is part of EA's extensive campaign to gain inroads into the $5 billion first-person shooter game market.

At stake is leadership in one of the hottest genres for the $60 billion global video game industry. First-person shooters currently account for about 16% of all console video game sales, and that's expected to increase, says Baird Equity Research analyst Colin Sebastian. Action games such as the Batman and Uncharted titles make up 22%, followed by 16% for sports games such as Madden NFL and NBA 2K

More than two years ago, EA began putting into place a strategy to loosen Call of Duty's grip on gamers. The first salvo was last fall's Medal of Honor, a reboot of the franchise that only a decade ago itself was the top first-person shooter franchise. Medal sold five million copies but amounted to a mere flesh wound, as Activision's 2010 release Call of Duty: Black Ops rolled on to set a sales record of 25 million copies.

Battlefield 3 appears to have more firepower. An on-the-rise development studio, DICE (Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment), has gradually built a following with its Battlefield series of games. Armed with its new Frostbite 2 technology to create Battlefield 3's cinematically fluid graphics, buzz has been building about the game. EA says pre-orders for Battlefield 3 are seven times that of previous Battlefield games and approach 3 million.

Stockholm-based DICE, acquired by EA in 2006, "set out to conquer a titan, to make a better game than the best shooter in the history of our industry, and do it by a wide margin," EA CEO John Riccitiello said recently on Fox Business News. "We set out to do something great here, and I think we have."

Battlefield's assault on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 "is certainly more aggressive than we have seen in the past," says Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) analyst Jesse Divnich. A recent trailer for the game, accompanied by the raucous Jay-Z track 99 Problems, carried a tagline of "Above and Beyond the Call."

And a future downloadable game map is called "Warfare." "EA is trying to position itself," he says, "so that when the next generation of consoles comes out, they can be there to innovate quicker and better than its competitors and, hopefully, overtake Call of Duty."

Even though Activision and EA are the top two U.S. game publishers, analysts don't think Battlefield 3 can contend with the next Call of Duty game.

For starters, Call of Duty is one of the top entertainment franchises of all time in terms of recurring revenue, Sebastian says. The last two Call of Duty games — 2010's Black Ops and 2009's Modern Warfare 2— have taken in $1.5 billion and $1.3 billion respectively at retail. That rivals the movie Titanic ($1.84 billion) and, combined, matches Avatar ($2.8 billion), Sebastian says.

EA is driving this idea of a "battle" between two powerhouses, he says. But that might be more corporate hype than reality. "Battlefield is a very strong video game franchise but not an entertainment juggernaut like Call of Duty," Sebastian says.

He expects Battlefield 3 to sell well, especially the PC version, but doesn't expect it to be a "must-have game for the holidays. …Call of Duty is a must-have game now."

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter says EA has succeeded to a point by trying to "provoke Call of Duty players to check (Battlefield 3) out. … I don't think that they expect that this year, everybody is going to abandon Call of Duty and embrace Battlefield 3."

A win for EA, he says, would be to sell about half of what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 does. "That would be a huge victory," Pachter says. "What EA doesn't want is Call of Duty to outsell them 4-to-1."

He notes that this is a battle that Activision itself had to fight years ago. In 1999, EA published the first Medal of Honor game for the original PlayStation. Originated by filmmaker Steven Spielberg, the World War II-based franchise has gone on to sell more than 30 million copies.

Among those who helped develop 2002's Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was a core group that left to found Infinity Ward, the studio that eventually created the Call of Duty franchise and the subsequent Modern Warfare games that dethroned Medal of Honor.

When Medal of Honor ruled, annual sales of a few million copies was considered a victory. In contrast, Modern Warfare 3 is projected to sell as many as 20 million copies by year's end.

What EA and DICE are trying to accomplish, "is essentially what Call of Duty did to Medal of Honor, but with much higher stakes," Pachter says. "And EA has more to lose, because it could screw up on Battlefield. Nobody knows if it's good."

Interest in shooter games is high enough, and "the market is big enough for both of them to exist and succeed," Divnich says. With the onslaught of advertising, new players may be recruited to one or both games.

"We expect each one to perform well in (its) own right," says Bob Puzon, vice president of merchandising for video game retail chain GameStop. More than 4,000 of its stores plan midnight launch events for both games. "They each have a large, loyal fan base, so the excitement and trash-talking is buzzing throughout the gaming world. I wouldn't say it is a clash — just two high-caliber shooters that gamers are passionate about and launching within a two-week period."

Google, Samsung unveil Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Galaxy Nexus

The smartphone, unveiled at a Samsung event in Hong Kong today, marks the debut of the latest version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich (each iteration of Android is named after a dessert).

For Samsung, the introduction of another flagship Google phone underscores its growing influence as an Android vendor. While the company was slow to shift away from basic phones and move into the smartphone game, it has more than made up for lost time with the success of its Galaxy line of Android mobile devices, particularly with its recent line of Galaxy S II phones in the U.S. It also made the previous Nexus phone, the Nexus S.

"Samsung and Google have closely collaborated to push the mobile experience forward," J.K. Shin, head of Samsung's mobile business, said in a statement.

Unlike previous versions, Ice Cream Sandwich will run on any mobile device.

"Ice Cream Sandwich demonstrates the Android platform's continued innovation with one release that works on phones and tablets and everything in between," Andy Rubin, head of Google's mobile business, said in a statement.

As with all Nexus phones, the Nexus Prime boasts some impressive specifications. The smartphone features a 1.2 gigahertz dual-core processor, a 4.65-inch Super Amoled screen with a resolution of 1280 by 720, 1 gigabyte of RAM, 32 gigabytes of storage, a 5-megapixel camera, and a pronounced curved shape that is intended to cradle the face. The body is a svelte 8.9 millimeters thick. The Nexus S also featured a subtle curve in its design.

The Nexus Prime debuts amid a number of other super smartphones. Earlier today, Verizon Wireless and Motorola unveiled the super-thin 4G LTE-enabled Droid Razr, a 7.1-millimeter thin phone that comes on the heels of the Droid Bionic. Apple, meanwhile, boasted of selling 4 million iPhones over the weekend after the 4S launched on Friday.

Since the first Nexus One from HTC, Google has used its line of Nexus phones as a showcase for the latest user interface and features available with the updated version of Android. In fact, the Nexus One was Google's stab at selling smartphones directly to consumers, although the lack of marketing and customer supported quickly forced the Internet giant to shutter those plans.

The anointed handset vendor partner, meanwhile, gets an early peek at those upgrades, useful for planning out the rest of its Android lineup. The Nexus S, for instance, was the first to have an integrated near-field communications chip, allowing it to use the Google Wallet mobile-payment system. The Galaxy Nexus will also have an NFC chip.

It's unclear how long Google will continue to pick its favorite Android partners; it plans to get into the hardware business itself with the planned $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility. Google, for its part, said it will remain a neutral partner to all of its vendors.

The pervasiveness of Android and Google's ability to work with multiple partners has fueled its ascent in the mobile world. The momentum has allowed it to take a dominant lead in the smartphone market even as Apple's iPhone remains the top-selling smartphone in the world. Google hopes the Nexus Prime will be able to sustain that strength.

BlackBerry maker offers free apps

TORONTO — Trying to make amends for massive outages last week, Research In Motion (RIM) on Monday promised BlackBerry users free premium apps and a month of technical support. But the apology is unlikely to placate miffed customers, many of whom are considering whether to part with the tarnished brand in favor of more popular devices such as Apple's newest iPhone.

Co-CEO Jim Balsillie acknowledged in an interview that RIM has come under intense pressure. Even so, he defended RIM's handling of the crisis, the company's worst outage ever.

The Canadian company said it will give BlackBerry users free apps worth more than $100. The apps will be available over the coming weeks on BlackBerry App World. They include iSpeech Translator, Bejeweled and Texas Hold'em Poker 2. The offer runs until the end of the year.

For its enterprise customers, Research in Motion will offer a month of free technical support.

Last week's blackout interrupted email and Internet services for tens of millions of users around the world and left RIM executives apologizing profusely days later.

"This is something we would like to offer as our form of thanks. It's $100 worth of premium apps. It's a substantial offer to our 70 million users around the world," Balsillie said.

Balsillie and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis came under fire last week, when they failed to talk publicly about the outages until Thursday morning, the fourth day of the service interruption.

Chris Allen, a 26-year-old cable technician in Fall River, Mass., said he was happy to get free apps for his personal BlackBerry but thinks the offer will miss the mark with core users.

"Most of the people that use BlackBerrys are business people and all they care about is: 'Does it work?' " Allen said.

Allen is pretty sure he'll get another BlackBerry when his phone contract is up next year, and the outage didn't change that.

"There's nothing that can beat a BlackBerry for productivity," Allen said.

In the Indian capital of New Delhi, Vandana Mehra, who works for the World Bank, thought the offer of free apps was "kind of ludicrous." The apps already on her phone tend to crash, and she doesn't use them much. The 46-year-old depends on her BlackBerry for communications and Web surfing, so the outage irritated her.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said RIM had to figure out what was wrong before announcing anything. Misek said it was just the latest in a string of problems for RIM, which has faced product delays, poor reviews and disappointing sales. RIM's stock is down more than 80 percent from its high three years ago.

Misek said much of RIM's future depends on it releasing BlackBerrys with the company's new QNX operating system, designed to compete with iPhones and Android phones. RIM has delayed the launch of QNX phones for months, but Balsillie suggested there could be an announcement Tuesday when Lazaridis speaks at an apps-development conference in San Francisco.

Balsillie said the new software "leapfrogs the mobile industry" and positions RIM for the next decade.

What iOS 5 brings to iPad

Whenever Apple company demonstrated away iOS four. two with regard to apple ipad this past year, these people held working about the indisputable fact that the program revise had been such as using a totally new apple ipad. These people launched multi-tasking, AirPrint, Files, AirPlay, Online game Middle, as well as e-mail threading, however to tell the truth, this did not alter the way in which We utilized the actual apple ipad in a substantial method.

Along with iOS 5, Apple company reduce the actual hyperbole (just a little) and shipped an excellent brand new OPERATING SYSTEM which truly starts upward brand new methods to make use of the apple ipad as well as reinforces the actual scarves in between matching Apple company products, such as the apple iphone, ipod itouch, as well as Apple company TELEVISION.

I am pleased to statement which Apple company didn't remember in order to mess more than proprietors from the unique apple ipad. Usually after i create these types of items these people begin beside me detailing the way the revise is just open to people who personal the newest edition from the gadget. Such a good shock to determine which iOS 5 is actually backed upon both apple ipad two and also the unique apple ipad, as well as the actual apple iphone, 3rd- as well as 4th-generation ipod itouch.

Because typical, upgrading the program demands hooking up the actual apple ipad for your pc as well as syncing via iTunes. Get rid of just a little emotional rip, although, because it might be the final period you will actually have to synchronize more than HARDWARE once again. Among the functions launched along with iOS 5 is actually a chance to revise the program within the atmosphere as well as synchronize along with iTunes more than your own house's Wi-Fi link. Apple company phone calls the actual function PC-Free.

The very first thing you will discover along with iOS 5 may be the add-on associated with 3 brand new applications in your house display: iMessages, Newsstand, as well as Memory joggers.

Along with iMessages, Apple company provides you with an immediate messaging answer which functions in between any kind of iOS gadget, such as apple ipad, apple iphone, as well as ipod itouch. You are able to immediately reveal textual content, pictures, or even movies. Messaging is actually free of charge more than Wi-Fi, however company costs might utilize if you are while using application more than 3G.

Messages provides just about all iOS customers the common I'M system with regard to delivering textual content, pictures, movies, hyperlinks, as well as areas.

In the event that this had been every other organization, I would stop wasting time to indicate the actual restrictions of the messaging system which convey just along with 1 make of items (observe: Rim Messenger), however whenever you include collectively each and every apple iphone, apple ipad, as well as ipod itouch within the world--that's many people in order to talk to.

Within real life make use of, you will nevertheless most likely make use of the iPad's e-mail application with regard to the majority of your own conversation. Exactly where iMessages is available in useful tend to be individuals instances when you are in your sofa together with your apple ipad as well as wish to rapidly deliver away a note for your partner's apple iphone, or even news together with your buddies instantly.

The 2nd brand new application launched within iOS 5 is actually Newsstand. This particular Apple's try from taking advantage of the actual iPad's attractiveness like a electronic journal or even paper (as well as obtaining a reduce from the earnings). Such as the iBooks application, Newsstand is actually offered like a digital bookshelf which shows all of your electronic journal or even paper monthly subscriptions, and also a hyperlink in to a good Apple company storefront with regard to purchasing much more content material.

High of this content contained in the Newsstand shop may be right here just about all together. Truly this can be a adorable method to instantly team collectively current journal as well as paper applications which make use of in-app buying as well as monthly subscriptions. I'd as much good fortune discovering excellent electronic publications such as " cable " and also the Brand new Yorker through downloading it their own applications in the iPad's Application shop rather than discovering all of them with the Newsstand storefront (that is truly simply goes to some area inside the Application shop). In a nutshell, the actual Newsstand application is actually only a smart repackaging associated with current content material, however it might be simply the one thing to obtain individuals in the actual safe place associated with considering publications because some thing noticeably diverse from applications.

The actual iPad's brand new Memory joggers application had been additionally the allow down--at minimum initially. Think about this like a friend application with regard to Diary. It is a location to put in writing check-lists associated with every day duties which are not always planned (such as individuals in your diary). It is presently there for the buying listings, dried out cleansing, along with other common duties.

For that greatest period, I have been obtaining through placing these kinds of points during my diary as well as determining the arbitrary period. I possibly could observe personally choosing Memory joggers rather. They've the benefit of remaining in your radar before you examine all of them away. You may make several listings, and you will team all of them collectively close to ideas because high as well as long-term because state, "Life Goals" or even "Bucket List".

Additionally, due to iCloud assistance, Memory joggers may synchronize throughout all of your iOS products instantly.

Although no application, an additional large brand new add-on in order to iOS is definitely an overhauled notice program that you could entry through swiping lower in the the surface of the display. Right here, you are able to rapidly look your own current e-mail, diary visits, iMessages, Memory joggers, along with other notifications, without having really taking within as well as from their own particular applications.

The brand new notice program additionally taps to the iPad's locking mechanism display, exactly where it may expensive several communications as well as visit memory joggers without having a person needing to swipe in order to uncover. Automatically, emails are not pressed towards the locking mechanism display, the industry great calculate with regard to privateness.

Below configurations you are able to separately personalize exactly what applications make the most of notices, exactly how individuals notices seem, as well as those allow it to be towards the locking mechanism display.

A lot may be made from Apple's free of charge iCloud storage space support, however typically it's integration along with iOS 5 seems unseen. That isn't a poor point.

Whenever you have a picture together with your apple iphone also it instantly seems inside your iPad's picture album--that's iCloud. Whenever you give a get in touch with in your apple ipad and it is immediately up-to-date in your ipod device Touch--that's iCloud. Whenever a audio buy in your ipod itouch is actually instantly drawn right down to your own apple iphone or even iPad--that's iCloud. This scarves all Apple's providers as well as products collectively, and you will most likely go with regard to given prior to the 7 days has ended.

Right now, on the planet associated with impair providers, exactly what iCloud provides is actually fairly acquire. You cannot by hand add essential documents or even sculpted songs as if you may along with Amazon's Impair Generate. You cannot selectively reveal your articles as if you may along with Dropbox. You cannot work with others upon paperwork such as Search engines Paperwork. You cannot use this like a long term store of the electronic pictures (iCloud is only going to maintain your own newest 1000 pictures) just like a Picassa or even Reddit.

However regardless of it's restrictions, iCloud will something which absolutely no additional support may do--it retains a regular back-up of the iPad's information as well as configurations. Which handles your own digital camera move, company accounts, paperwork, applications, bought press, as well as configurations. In case your apple ipad will get go beyond with a coach, you can enter a good Apple company Shop (nicely, let's assume that exact same coach skipped a person), purchase a brand new apple ipad, as well as properly presume which all your aged iPad's information may circulation lower out of your iCloud back-up such as absolutely nothing actually occurred. Let us hope which in no way occurs, however it is soothing to understand which Apple company offers this kind of insurance coverage free of charge.

Routing

Making your way around about the apple ipad is created just a little simpler within iOS 5. To begin with, the actual notices pull-down about the house display indicates much less period leaping in to e-mail along with other applications suitable for notices. A person provide this the look in support of leap to the applications whenever some thing essential pops up.

With regards to dishonoured in between applications (for example. multitasking) you no longer require in order to double-click the house switch just like a laboratory rat. Through putting 4 or 5 fingertips about the display as well as swiping remaining or even correct, you are able to rapidly switch via any kind of open up applications. Individually, I love to foot the actual display such as some type of bored stiff home kitty. Additionally, for that report, 6-10 fingertips will even have the desired effect, however you will appear truly foolish. All of us halted lacking screening 10 fingertips in addition 1 foot.

You are able to nevertheless double-tap the house switch to get into the actual holder associated with operating applications, however the exact same 4 or 5 hand swipe within an upwards path works equally well.

Last but not least, in order to help to make the house switch totally outdated, Apple company offers additional a chance to near applications having a five-finger touch. By using this method, any kind of operating application reduces aside in to absolutely nothing and also you seem like the lord.

The majority of iOS 5's enhancements tend to be little modifications. For instance, the actual iPad's "iPod" application may be renamed "Music", maintaining points in line with the actual apple iphone as well as ipod itouch. The actual application has additionally relocated from it's iTunes-esque appear in support of the solution, much more minimum (perhaps much less fascinating) style which includes the switch which straight hyperlinks to the actual iTunes application.

The actual Picture application right now provides an modifying choice upon person pictures, letting you harvest, turn, improve, as well as get rid of red-colored attention. The actual reveal choice inside Pictures may also be used right now in order to by hand produce photos through the begining, or even include pictures in order to leaving photos. Additionally, let us remember how the intro associated with iCloud provides a brand new Picture Flow tabs which shows pictures through all of your iCloud connected products. The apple ipad did not possess Picture Flow allowed automatically, however an easy fine-tune within the iPad's configurations menus created points correct.

The actual iPad's computer keyboard and today end up being divided aside with regard to much more comfortable usb inputting. This can be a benefit for anybody that seems foolish propping this particular point on the entered lower-leg or even another uncomfortable inputting placement. That is not saying which usb inputting with an apple ipad is not similarly uncomfortable, however occasionally this offers an additional modicum associated with self-esteem.

Within brand Apple company design (critically, it is most likely branded) the actual divided computer keyboard is actually utilized through actually tugging the actual computer keyboard aside together with your fingertips. You are able to go back to the conventional computer keyboard through pressing both attributes back again collectively. Through keeping the actual computer keyboard image within the base remaining part, you may also reposition the actual computer keyboard anyplace about the display, which may be useful once the secrets unintentionally imprecise a few crucial little bit of content material on the web site.

The actual iPad's Firefox internet browser offers benefitted through a number of improvements. Controlling several open up home windows isn't any lengthier dealt with through taking backwards and forwards in between thumbnail look at. Rather, the actual apple ipad right now sets apart webpages in to tab, because Lord meant. Critically although, the actual intro associated with tab provides the entire encounter a lot nearer to searching on the full-fledged pc. Right now, if perhaps this experienced Expensive (which a person's for those a person Google android fanboys).

An additional excellent add-on towards the iPad's Firefox internet browser is really a function known as Readers which changes any kind of web site right into a much more magazine-like design, draining aside advertisements as well as images as well as letting you very easily change font dimension. A brand new save menus known as Reading through Checklist has additionally already been additional, providing you with a fast method to put aside hyperlinks to see later on. As soon as these types of hyperlinks happen to be revisited, these people proceed away your own Reading through List's "Unread" line, however may be utilized later on from the individual "All" line.

The actual reveal switch inside Firefox right now features a "Tweet" switch with regard to immediately capturing away internet hyperlinks for your Tweets legions. Exactly the same Tweets integration may also be present in the actual iPad's Pictures application, letting you click an image as well as twitter this with no 3rd party applications.

As well as for those a person Apple company TELEVISION enthusiasts available, iOS 5 with regard to apple ipad provides cellular movie reflecting with regard to revealing content material in your TELEVISION. You need a good Apple company TELEVISION attached to your own tv to make this particular function, however when you perform, your own iPad's show is actually shown precisely in your TELEVISION. Which means video games in your TELEVISION, pictures, Internet, iTunes, something your own center wishes.

To learn more upon most of the scaled-down functions supplied within iOS 5 (such as computer keyboard cutting corners, Chart enhancements, Discover My personal Buddies, as well as Online game Middle, take a look at the overview of iOS 5 with regard to apple iphone.

The brand new apple ipad house display functions applications with regard to iMessages, Newsstand, as well as Memory joggers.

Personally, iOS5 is actually the most important revise I have observed for that apple ipad. The actual options that come with iOS four (AirPlay, AirPrint, Online game Middle) appeared awesome in writing, however We in no way experienced a lot make use of on their behalf during my everyday life.

In comparison, the truth that iCloud as well as Wi-Fi synchronize allow it to be to ensure that I might will never need for connecting my personal apple ipad to my personal pc in order to synchronize files--that modifications points personally. Over-the-air OPERATING SYSTEM improvements. Amen! Along with iMessages, I understand possess a common messaging system for those associated with my personal buddies operating iOS. The truth that Firefox with regard to apple ipad right now reacts just like a correct tabbed browser--that's substantial.

So that as worthless since it seems, having the ability to change in between applications through moving my personal hand over the display is really a night-and-day alter personally. It is quicker, much more visceral, and much more organic. You are able to travel for this point in ways a person could not prior to. This seems a lot more like the actual future--and let's not pretend, is not how the entire stage of the point?
