In this day and age, almost everyone has a smartphone or tablet device. Many, like me, will use multiple devices at differing times depending on where they are and what they are doing. This shows our need to search and communicate while we watch, and that touch screen mobile devices are proving better for the job than desktops. Although it is important to remember that different devices are being adopted as tools for specific internet activities in specific environments. The El Niño phenomenon dramatically affects the weather in many parts of the world. It is therefore important to predict its appearance. Various climate models, seasonal forecasting models, ocean-atmosphere coupled models, and statistical models attempt to predict El Niño as a part of interannual climate variability. Predicting El Niño has been possible only since the 1980s, when the power of computers became sufficient to cover very complicated large-scale ocean-atmosphere interactions.

El Niño were observed as early as the 1600s. More systematic study began at the end of the 19th century, when Peruvian geographers noted unusual oceanic and climatic phenomena occurring periodically along the Peru coast. They noticed that eastern Pacific warming was sometimes very strong. In the 1920s The British scientist Sir Gilbert Walker empirically identified that some notable climate anomalies—changes in atmospheric pressure and circulation—happen around the world every few years. He invented the term for those climate oscillations, "the Southern Oscillation."

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the 1997-'98 El Niño was a major factor in 1997s record high temperatures. The estimated average surface temperature for land and sea worldwide was 0.8°F higher than the 1961-1990 average of 61.7°F. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 1998 has set all-time highs of global land and ocean surface temperatures, above record high levels in 1997. In 1998 the mean temperature was1.2°F (0.7°C) above the long-term (since 1880) mean of 56.9°F (13.8°C).

The impact of the 1997/8 El Niño has been felt in many parts of the world: Droughts have occurred in the Western Pacific Islands and Indonesia as well as in Mexico and Central America. In Indonesia drought caused uncontrollable forest fires and floods, while warm weather led to a bad fisheries season in Peru, and extreme rainfall and mud slides in southern California. Corals in the Pacific Ocean were bleached by warmer than average water, and shipping through the Panama Canal was restricted by below-average rainfall.

The prevalent surface winds across the equatorial Pacific ocean are easterly trade winds. These drag warm surface water away from the coast of Peru and cause colder deep ocean water to come to the surface (so-called "upwelling"). Upwelling causes thethermocline (the zone at the top part of the ocean in which temperature decreases rapidly with depth) to be much shallower in the Eastern Pacific than in the western. Trade winds and the equatorial upwelling maintain warm sea surface temperatures at the western equatorial Pacific and cold surface temperatures in the east. When trade winds weaken, the equatorial upwelling decreases, the thermocline gets deeper, the ocean surface along the coast of South America becomes warmer, and trade winds weaken even more. This in turn causes surface waters in the eastern Pacific to became even warmer and so on. This mechanism is known as the Bjerknes hypothesis and represents an onset of El Niño.

The questions remain: what stops warming in the eastern Pacific and why do El Niño events last approximately 12-18 months? The widely accepted (but not unique!) explanation is the delayed oscillator hypothesis.

During the warming event in the eastern Pacific, the thermocline deepens along the equator and rises in the regions about 3 to 8 latitude degrees from the equator. These off-equator thermocline anomalies have little effect on the ocean surface temperature, but they propagate westward under the ocean surface as so-called Rossby waves, with a speed of about 0.8 m/s. When Rossby waves reach the Indonesian archipelago they are reflected back as another type of the ocean underwater waves, namely equatorial Kelvin waves. Because of the deep thermocline in the western Pacific, the arrival of the Rossby signal does not affect surface temperature. Kelvin waves are much faster than Rossby waves and propagate eastward along the equator with an approximately 3 m/s speed as a shallower thermocline anomaly. When Kelvin waves reach the equatorial Eastern Pacific, they move the thermocline (and, therefore, cold deep waters) in this region even closer to the surface, cool the ocean's surface and terminate the warm El-Nino event.

El Niño is a warm phase of the interannual climate oscillation called El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, an example of large-scale ocean-atmosphere interaction, and is characterized by large-scale warming of the surface tropical Pacific Ocean. El Niño events occur every 3-6 years, last 9-12 months, sometimes even up to 18 months, and have a big impact on world weather.

The major impacts of El Niño are temperature anomalies, changes in precipitation variability, floods and droughts throughout the world.

El Niño events happen irregularly and are hard to predict. However many numerical climate models predicted the last few El Niño events successfully. El Niño forecasting is becoming more and more reliable with our improving knowledge of the phenomenon's nature, with the help of more and more powerful computers, and with the operational El Niño Southern Oscillation observation system.

More importantly, since LogMeIn is optimized for interaction via touch on the iPad, I am able to do anything I normally do on the Mac (or Windows PC) by touching the screen. I use this method to start the Firefox browser, and enter the web-based WordPress editor on the home machine.
  
Writing blog posts in the WordPress editor using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard is more efficient than I dreamed possible. I expected this keyboard to be good for knocking off a very short email, but not for writing blog posts consisting of hundreds of words. What I’ve discovered is with a little practice it’s easier to type on the screen than you might think; it’s certainly a viable method in a pinch. For much longer posts I use an external Bluetooth keyboard. It folds up and fits in my pocket, yet opens into a full-sized keyboard. I don’t absolutely need it for writing on the iPad, but I’m no glutton for punishment. I have the tool so I use it when it makes more sense.
  
Clever readers will ask why I don’t just log into the home machine and write the post in the browser, rather than create the draft using the iPad local app. That’s a fair question and the proper answer is I could easily do that. But as well as the LogMeIn method works, when I am concentrating on the post writing process itself, I prefer the distraction-free environment of the local editor. It’s strictly personal preference, but there’s no reason doing it all through the remote connection wouldn’t work. I have done it that way, as a matter of fact, and still prefer to do it in two steps.
  
I must make it clear that this method works for me as I already have everything in place to make it work. I have multiple computers in the home office, so it’s no burden (financial or otherwise) to have one available for remote access. I already owned LogMeIn on the iPad ($29.99), so I didn’t have to spend the money just for blogging. This may not be the case for you, and I am not recommending you spend a lot of money to do this.
  
This method is working so well for me that I could easily employ it for short trips without impacting my ability to work. I don’t intend to do that, but I could if I needed to. That’s a liberating thought.
  
Prior to the launch of the iPad bloggers started thinking about how convenient the slate might be for sharing information. Some even believed the iPad would make such an impact on the process that it would change blogging for the better. While it’s certainly true the iPad makes interacting with the web easy, and something that can be done almost anytime, it’s still not clear how useful it can be for the actual process of blogging. The fog is clearing, however, and some bloggers are using the iPad to handle most of the blogging process. I would never want to use the iPad as my only blogging tool, but I admit I am finding it far more useful for the task than I thought it would be. With some careful thought and best practices, blogging can indeed be done on the iPad.

Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6 Acquits Itself Well As A Basic

The front is mostly a somewhat-dim 3.6-inch, 480-by-320 LCD screen with three standard Android touch buttons below it. At 4.6 by 2.6 by .4 inches (HWD) and 4.2 ounces, it'll fit easily into any hand and most pockets.

Here's the thing about the screen. Yes, it's the same resolution as many low-cost smartphones. But remember that we're competing with the Apple iPod touch here. Because of the touch's dominance in this category, there are different expectations for media players than for phones, and this screen is noticeably dimmer and grainier than that of the iPod touch. In a row of iPods, the Galaxy Player 3.6 will stand out in an unattractive way. That's why we're more likely to recommend the larger-screen Galaxy Player 4.2, whose 800-by-480 screen stands up better against its top competitor.

The Galaxy Player uses its Bluetooth connection to pull off a neat trick: The handheld can act as a Bluetooth headset for a simpler phone you have lying around. When it's connected to your phone, you can answer calls on the Galaxy Player as if it was a smartphone. You can also dial from the Galaxy Player's contacts book, though there's no traditional dialer, and no easy way to activate voice dialing. The Player doesn't share your phone's Internet connection over Bluetooth. To get on the Web, you'll need a Wi-Fi connection; we had no problem connecting the Galaxy Player to our 802.11n network.

The relatively dim screen and lack of phone capability make for great battery life; we got 8 hours, 15 minutes of full-brightness video playback time on a charge, compared to five and a half hours on an iPod touch with its screen brightness set to full and eight hours with the iPod touch's brightness set to half.

The included earphones come with a microphone, and clear rubber flanges that create a bit of a seal within the ear to improve sound and provide some very basic passive noise cancellation. You should still look at upgrading, but this pair is better than the signature white earbuds that come with the iPod touch.

Performance
Built around a 1GHz, single-core Cortex-A8 processor, the CPU is the same as you'll find in many inexpensive-to-midrange smartphones. It runs Android 2.3, with no real hope of an upgrade to 4.0. It was undistinguished at benchmarks, but performed well overall because of the low-res screen. With fewer pixels to push, the processor doesn't have to work as hard as it does with higher-resolution devices.

Casual games like Angry Birds and Draw Something performed well. Web browsing will feel cramped if you're used to the now-more-common larger 800-by-480 screens, but at least the Galaxy Player supports Flash 11.

Along with the standard Google Play market, the Galaxy Player comes with the Samsung Apps store, a selection of mostly free apps curated by Samsung. Proprietary Samsung apps let the Galaxy Player be used as a remote viewfinder for Samsung Wi-Fi-enabled cameras, or as a remote control for Samsung Wi-Fi-enabled TVs.

There's a 2-megapixel camera on the back of the Galaxy Player 3.6 and a VGA camera on the front, but don't expect much of either of them. The rear camera takes slightly hazy, very contrasty pictures with some low-light blur and in one case, rather odd fish-eye distortion. The front camera is for taking basic snapshots of your face. You can record unremarkable 640-by-480 videos at 25 frames per second with the rear camera; there's no flash.

Conclusions
You're not actually saving much money by getting the Galaxy Player 3.6 instead of a smartphone. Looking only at prepaid no-contract Android phones, Virgin Mobile has the LG Optimus V (4 stars) for $129.99, MetroPCS has the HTC Wildfire S (3 stars) for $119, and Cricket has the Samsung Vitality (3 stars) for $99.99. None of them are really standouts, but neither is this device.

So the Galaxy Player 3.6 is for the niche of people who really, truly don't want a smartphone, but also want a touch-screen gadget that runs apps. I suspect many of those people will be kids. (They want smartphones, but their parents won't let them have them.) At $150, the Player 3.6 is a decent device that undercuts the price of the iPod touch by $50.

With the Galaxy Player 4.2 and iPod touch now both at $199, there's no reason to pay any more for your media handheld. The older Galaxy Player 4.0 (4 stars) still lists at $229, with no advantages over the less expensive Galaxy Player 4.2. The Sony NWZ-Z1000 ($249, 3 stars), meanwhile, has a faster processor but worse battery life than either Galaxy Player, and no camera or camcorder. Don't buy that one either.

But I think those $199 products are the sweet spot, and the Galaxy Player 3.6 is shooting a bit too low. With every similar competitor running at 800-by-480 or greater, the Player 3.6's grainy 320-by-480 display just looks cheap in comparison. Save your pennies for the Galaxy Player 4.2 or the iPod.

Toshiba Announced Its 13-inch Excite Tablet: Who Will Use Mobile Computing?

When Toshiba announced its 13-inch Excite tablet Tuesday, the company made an argument that one size does not fit all when it comes to touchscreen devices. But who will actually use such a large slab of mobile computing?

“The Excite 13 is what we see as a home tablet,” Jared Leavitt, a Toshiba spokesman, told Wired. “The larger size makes it an ideal kitchen tablet. You can watch how-to videos while you’re cooking, or look up recipes. And then later, you can bring it into the living room to watch videos with the kids, or to look at family photos with friends.”

Thankfully, Toshiba is shipping the Excite 13, which runs on Google’s Android 4.0 operating system, with a stand that will relieve owners from having to hold, or prop up, the large device themselves. And despite being bigger than pretty much every other competing tablet on the market, the Excite 13 is fairly thin and light for its size, Leavitt said, noting that it will weigh 2.2 pounds and measure 0.4 inches thick.

Nonetheless, anyone who’s watching the tablet market has to wonder why Toshiba is releasing a tablet behemoth in a world enamored with smaller devices. After all, the first tablet to gain any widespread consumer adoption other than Apple’s iPad is the 7-inch Kindle Fire. And looking forward, the hottest rumors focus on an iPad mini and a 7-inch tablet that would be Google’s next flagship mobile device. In short: Small is in, and big isn’t even part of the conversation.

Jared Spool, the CEO of User Interface Engineering, a usability research firm, agrees that Toshiba is thinking about tablet design in a way that its rivals aren’t. But Spool doesn’t agree that the world needs, or wants, a 13-inch tablet.

“This is the sort of typical maneuver of just adding another feature without improving the actual user experience,” Spool told Wired. “It’s just bigger, and it’s not clear to me that anyone is asking for bigger. You can only get the iPad in one size and nobody is saying, ‘Gee, it just feels a little too small to me.’”

But while there seems to be no consumer demand for larger tablets, the use case of watching movies as a group, or flipping through photos with loved ones on the couch, on a 13-inch slate isn’t too hard to imagine, says Jakob Nielsen, principal at the Nielsen Norman Group, a usability research firm.

“If a small group of people is trying to use the tablet together, sitting on the couch and consuming content, this size makes sense,” Nielsen told Wired. “But I do think [the Excite 13] might be a bit of overreach. I don’t think that people only need one computer. Nowadays, most people have two computers, between a laptop and a smartphone. But where this Toshiba tablet fits in — between those devices and the TV — I’m not sure. It’s not likely to be a big success.”

Spool also predicts that the Excite 13 will be neither an iPad killer, nor a top-selling Android tablet.

“These types of enhancements are knee-jerk reactions from companies who are trying to ‘out feature’ other companies,” he said. “But what this comes down to is that it’s not the specific technology in a tablet that makes it exciting. It’s the user experience. And there’s just a lot less to do on an Android tablet than an iPad. And what there is to do is much clumsier because the screen sizes and specs for Android tablets are all over the place. A 13-inch screen and a bunch of top specs do nothing to change that.”

Among the other specs the Excite 13 touts are a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear facing camera, and four rear-mounted speakers to blast audio from the tablet’s aluminum back. The tablet also sports a 1,600×900 screen resolution, a micro-USB port, a micro-HDMI port and a full-size SD card slot.

The Excite 13 sits at the top of a revamped tablet line for Toshiba, in terms of both price and screen size with a price tag of $649.99 for the 32GB model, and $749.99 for the 64GB model, when it hits stores in early June.

For those looking for a more traditionally sized tablet that still packs a quad-core punch, Toshiba will also ship in June a 7.7-inch version of the Excite (known as the Excite 7) at $499.99 for 16GB of storage and $579.99 for 32GB. A 10-inch Excite, dubbed the Excite 10, will ship in May for $449.99 with 16 GB of storage and $529.99 for the 32GB. The Excite range of tablets replaces Toshiba’s old line of Thrive slates, which were offered in both a 7-inch and 10-inch model.

Forty-eight percent of those people surveyed in February chose an Android-based device, keeping in line with the Android numbers in the overall smartphone market.

However, 43 percent of new owners said they bought an iPhone, while 5 percent said they chose a BlackBerry device.

The numbers reflect what analysts and journalists heard March 29 during a conference call with new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins, who said that the BlackBerry maker needed to pull away a bit from the consumer market and focus on its strength in the enterprise. Heins' comments were part of a larger discussion about the need to restructure RIM in the wake of struggles over the past couple of years, as Apple and Google-driven devices have eaten away at BlackBerry's market share.

In the previous fiscal quarter, RIM saw its bad news continue, seeing a 25 percent drop in revenue over the same period last year and posting a $125 million loss. The company shipped 11.1 million BlackBerry smartphones and more than 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.

During the conference call, Heins admitted that RIM under the previous regime was behind on the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend, with a growing number of employees looking to use their personal smartphones and tablets for work. He said RIM will refocus on its enterprise expertise and address the consumer market in select areas, and mostly through partnerships.

"We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we try to be everybody's darling and all things to all people," Heins said. "Therefore, we plan to build on our strengths, to go after targeted consumer segments, and we will seek strong partnerships to deliver those consumer features and content that are not central to the BlackBerry [value] position, for example, media consumption applications."

Smartphones are rapidly growing in popularity, according to Nielsen's numbers. According to the survey, 49.7 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers now own smartphones, as of February. That compares with 36 percent of subscribers in February 2011, a 38 percent increase year-over-year.

The first iPhone was referred to as the 2G. The 2G iPhone was capable of using the second-generation cellular network Edge. The Apple 2G iPhone was first released with 4G of internal storage and then released in September 2007 with 8GB and 16GB versions.

Third generation (3G) phones were the first to cross a telephone and a handheld computer, with a built –in web browser and e-mail service.

3G networks boast broadband transmission speeds of 1-3 million bits per second, enough to send full color motion pictures through the phone.

It also will offer more than 500 software applications, including games, educational programs, mobile commerce and business productivity tools, may be a far more important development than the iPhone 3G, which goes on sale at the same time.

Apple had a history of trials an failures until the release of the iPhone, which is the phone that actually changed the mobile phone game.

How To Manage IT Project

With the high technolody, IT project becoming more and more important in our lives, we can say that our lives can not without IT now. IT project teams are made up of knowledge workers who are categorized by skill types or job functions. For example, a project team might require business analysts, developers, team leads, project managers, architects, or database analysts. Finding the right person to assign to a project or task can be the most challenging problem confronting the organization. Typically, quality staff is scarce and therefore heavily sought by competing projects. Without resource management processes, the organization struggles with allocation of its staff across projects.

According to a 2008 Gartner report, 15% of all IT projects failed that year because of high cost variance, while 18% were unsuccessful because they were substantially late. This means that in 2008, 1 in 3 technology projects failed. Why such a dismal success rate? Such projects primarily involve the management of human resources in order to accomplish the target schedule, cost, and quality, so it is safe to assume that poor resource management played a large role. Unfortunately, without effective resource management processes, such organizations are left asking questions like:"Who is working on what?" "How do I get this project back on schedule?" "How much more work will it take to finish?"

In addition, project managers are responsible for keeping scope, budget, and schedules on track. How can project managers achieve this when they don’t know how many hours it takes to accomplish a task, or how many hours remain in the project? Without an effective system in place, project managers must constantly intrude on team members to get estimates. Likewise, the management team is always asking for status reports and accurate information on projects so that they can make critical decisions. Of course, the project manager is always the last to know when one of his or her critical resources has been magically "re-assigned" to another high profile project! In the words of a famous song, many project managers are "stitched up, out of their mind, feeling strung out, lagging behind, trapped in, can’t do a thing because they’re locked down…."

From an executive perspective, it is impossible to make effective decisions when one does not know what people are working on or how the projects are doing. Additionally, if strategic projects do not have priority for critical, scarce resources, it will cause stress for the organization as a whole.

Many organizations feel that it is enough to track project progress on a percentage complete basis. Unfortunately, this is not consistent with established methodologies, which nearly always suggest that the only accurate measure of progress is tracking work effort.

The Apple Inc Own The MostAdvanced Celphone Now


I think that all the people in the world want to own an iphone4,the greatest cellphone in the world now.Apple's launch of the iPhone 4 has seen the greatest excitement for a new phone ever - and with HD video recording, a super high-res screen and ridiculously slim dimensions, it's not hard to see why.


But things are a little different now - not only was the iPhone 3GS something of a non-update to the iPhone range, but there are finally decent alternatives in the smartphone market, with the HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S leading the Android fight right to Apple's door.
Add to that the first major leak of an Apple product a couple of months before launch, and suddenly the iPhone 4 has a lot to do to impress.
At least Apple has unleashed the big guns for this effort - before we get into the headline specs, the design itself is a massive talking point on its own.

Jobs' chats on stage to unveil a new iPhone might have got a little repetitive (best this, magical that etc) but this is the first time since the first iPhone way back in January 2007 that we've seen a variation on the standard iPhone design.
Gone is the traditional curved back and plastic exterior with slightly chunky dimensions; in is a chassis that's only 9.3mm thin at its thickest point and a new stainless steel and glass industrial design.
If you're an iPhone fan, there's a good chance you won't like the look of the iPhone the first time you pick it up - it's the same weight as the iPhone 3GS at 137g, but it's a lot smaller, with dimensions of 115.2mm x58.6 mm x 9.3mm, so it feels like a much weightier and compact model.
The edges are stainless steel, apparently forged by winged unicorns in an iceberg (or something) to be 10 times stronger than 'normal' steel.
Overall, the design might not impress some people the first time they pick up the phone - a number of people we showed the phone to grimaced a little bit the first time they handled it.
It's a sharp and weighty-feeling phone, make no mistake - and it doesn't sit as comfortably in the hand as well as other iPhones of the past have.
But it feels premium, and at up to £600, it had better - that's a lot to pay when you consider you could get a 42-inch 1080p LCD for £200 less these days.

Science is search for the profound knowledge. Scientists investigate the world around us. They observe how things work and develop ideas about ways to make them work better. Sometimes they try to test an idea to explain how something works. Scientists perform experiments to find out how things work. The knowledge that they discover is useful for many things. It can help to build new machines. It can help scientists to develop new medicines or cure a disease. Technology is the use of scientific knowledge to create new things. An inventor with a new idea or design for an invention may decide to have the idea protected. The idea gets protection from the law in a paper called a patent. A patent prevents other people from making, using, or selling the new idea without permission from the inventor. Some inventions are simply a better way of doing or building something. They may improve an existing technology. Other inventions are much more complicated.
What did you do today? Did you talk on the telephone? Did you ride in a car or on a bus? Did you use a computer or turn on a light? If you did any of these things, you used technology. Scientists use all sorts of technology to study the Earth and the Universe. Businesses often have telephones, fax machines, and computers. Graphic designers use desktop publishing programs to create books and magazines. Doctors frequently use medical technology. They use it to treat injuries, illnesses, and diseases such as cancer. Pilots fly airplanes and helicopters. Who knows what jobs will be created by new technologies in the future!
Almost everybody uses some form of technology at work, home, or school. Computer programmers use computer technology to write a computer program. People may write letters using a computer program called a word processor. Many people work in the entertainment industry. Camera operators use television and motion-picture cameras. They use them to make TV shows and movies. Disc jockeys, or DJs, play records and CDs on the radio. The key to this work of great genius was the human eye. Leonardo’s optical key was associated with Sir Francis Bacon’s vision of a great empire for all men based upon all knowledge through the eye. Thomas Jefferson, inspired by this concept, depicted the Egyptian All seeing eye concept upon the great seal of America.
